We’ve all had those moments where you finish a book, close the cover, set it down and think, “My life will never be the same.” Purple Cow by Seth Godin ignited one of those moments for me.
At the time, I was a 23-year-old and had just started my second job out of college. I should have known that this new job was destined to be a mistake when I showed up for my first day and they were clean- ing out a closet for my office. I was hired to be a software developer for a local direct mail and fulfillment company. However, on day one, I was told that they needed me to work in the printing room for “just a couple of weeks.”
Three months later I was still there with no end in sight.
Frustrated, I started Googling around for new career ideas. I soon found Seth Godin. His ideas about work and careers were so inspiring that I picked up his book Purple Cow on the way home and read it straight through to the end. Thanks to Seth, I immediately realized that there were better options for my professional life than my closet office and running a giant printer.
A couple weeks later I worked up the nerve to email Seth and ask him a question. I fired it off assuming it would vanish into the inbox abyss never to be seen again. But low and behold, within the hour, Seth emailed me back with a thoughtful answer.
I soon learned that this warm and responsive behavior was normal for him.
Every day he publishes at least one blog post. Every day he answers reader emails. Every day he thinks of new ways to positively influence the world. His writing and his ideas have changed the lives of thousands, if not millions, of readers like me for the better. Consequently, when Seth’s next book or product launches, I willingly purchase it because I am so thankful for how relentlessly helpful he has been and continues to be. He has created an excitement within me to continue learning from him.
Through his reliable blog, email and other writing, Seth has created a long-term connection with me that results in me buying at least one copy of every book he releases.
